Reporters pressed Easley on specific high-dollar bills such as a chauffeured Mercedes and fancy meals that included orders of leg of pheasant with homemade sausages and rabbit with black truffles and foie gras.
"I don't order cars. I really don't...I don't pick out the menus. I don't decide the venues," Easley said. "They asked me to come in the final leg of the trip in Italy to bring tourism to North Carolina."
The state departments that planned the two trips are run by people appointed by Easley.
And ol' Mike ain't the only Easley getting over on the people of North Carolina......

On a 3 to 1 vote, your Warren County property taxes are going UP nearly 9%to 92¢ per hundred!
Republican commissioner, Bill Davis, staying true to his conservative principles, was the only "NO" vote.
Taxpayers will have to cough up another 8¢ to pay for the county's inability to control spending and the board's past procrastination on dealing with long standing needs.
WCGOP knows that in 2009, a new county commissioner enthusiastically backed by the PAC and the county Dems cannot be good news for taxpayers.
T-Bone proved to be an unreliable vote for the PAC and the tax 'n' spend Democrats. Barry Richardson is an official with the PAC so he dances every time they pull his strings. Ulysses Ross voted for what felt good, not necessarily what was good for taxpayers.
Revaluation comes up next year. Couple that with this tax increase (and who knows where taxes will go to next year) we could be reaching into our pockets again.
You gotta really think about the justices Hussein Obama will nominate. We'll be living with their decisions for decades after Obama leaves office......

Felonies are not youthful indiscretions
To the Editor,
Shame on our state Senator Doug Berger.
He has sponsored three bills (SB677, SB1081 and SB1336) to hide serious felonies
of convicted criminals -- serious adult, premeditated felonies like extortion,
larceny, forgery, breaking and entering, intimidation, smuggling, embezzlement,
writing over $2,000 in bad checks, looting, credit card theft over $500, and so
on. Berger's claim is that these felonies are youthful indiscretions. Hardly.
Then perhaps to bolster his position, he
counsels with a set of parents who are trying to get their son's felony record
hidden. These parents, living in Wake County, appeared on a radio show and at
county commission both in Franklin County.
During a local call-in radio program on May 17, the host patiently listened as
these parents from Wake County (outside Berger's district) said they had
enlisted Sen. Berger in support of hiding the felony conviction of their son. On
the radio program, the parents' original claim was that their son was a victim
of a cruel system that punishes, eternally, the one-time stupid action of a
teenager. The parents' claim was that their son can't go to school, he can't get
a job above minimum wage, and he can't join the military to protect our country.
If there was a radio show preparation conversation with Sen. Berger, he was
remiss in not having the parents clarify that their son's court record shows
that, while the son was convicted for one felony, he got away with two felonies
but was caught after the third alleged breaking, entering and larceny. Without
being counseled to disclose the full facts, it could be said the parents were
hiding an essential part of the story. Shame on lawyer Doug Berger.
These same parents from Wake County made
the same presentation to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners on June 17.
Again, the full facts were not presented. The story was presented of a son as
victim when in fact he was caught after three times allegedly breaking in and
stealing. Again, shame on lawyer Doug Berger for not encouraging full
disclosure.
Doug Berger's attempt to hide serious criminal felonies is not in keeping with a
sitting senator who promised to represent the citizens. Chuck Stires, Berger's
opponent in the next election, believes state government's responsibility is to
protect the citizen before it makes accommodation to a criminal. That's the way
it should be. Chuck will get my vote.

Local schools, like Warren County's schools, will have to come up with $34 MILLION to cover fuel costs.
Democrats made it look like a reasonable budget, but forgot to tell the local schools systems that they were going to cut them short.
Our Democrat representatives in Raleigh, Doug Berger and Michael Wray voted to short-change our schools, and pass the problem to the counties.
Republican senators tried to introduce and amendment that would fix this, but the Democrats blocked them with a parliamentary maneuver.

10 States Ask California Court to Delay Gay Marriage
Friday, May 30, 2008SAN FRANCISCO -- The attorneys general of 10 states are urging the California Supreme Court to delay finalizing its ruling to legalize same-sex marriage.
The attorneys general say in court documents filed Thursday that they have an interest in the case because they would have to determine if their states would recognize the marriage of gay residents who wed in California.
They want the court to stay its ruling until after the November election, when voters likely will decide whether to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage.
California Attorney General Jerry Brown is urging the court not to grant the stay.
The states involved are Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota and Utah.

NEW YORK -- A Christian legal organization says it has sued to stop New York from recognizing same-sex marriages legally performed in other states.
The Alliance Defense Fund says it filed its lawsuit Tuesday in a court in the Bronx. Several Republican state senators are named as party to the suit.
Gay marriage is unconstitutional in New York. Gov. David Paterson however told state agencies on May 14 that New York must recognize same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts, Canada and other places where they are legal.
The Arizona-based legal group filing the lawsuit has intervened elsewhere in gay marriage and religious freedom cases including those involving abortion and what it calls traditional family values.

Goodall urged fellow senators to get rid of the death tax because it gives incentives for individuals to leave North Carolina and invest in states that have no death tax at all.
Cites a February, 2008 report, published by the Connecticut Department of Revenue which has a death tax similar to North Carolina’s, which discovered a net migration of residents out of that state in recent years. According to the study, 52 percent of retirees leaving Connecticut did so “primarily” because of the state’s death tax. Over 76 percent left the state “in part” due to the death tax.

The spending plan approved by the Senate last week fails to extend President Bush’s tax cuts — and could lead to the largest tax increase in U.S. history.
“Make no mistake: This tax hike is gargantuan,” the Investor’s Business Daily states in an editorial.
“Simply by not making Bush’s tax cuts permanent, taxes will rise by a minimum of $2.8 trillion between now and 2018.”
The IBD says that if the tax cuts are allowed to expire in 2010:
Spending will rise by half a trillion dollars over the next five years. And the Democrats will pay for it by raising taxes by $683 billion — “the biggest such increase ever.”
About 48 million married couples — “the heart of the middle class that Democrats say they want to help” — will see an average annual tax increase of $3,007.
The tax bill for the elderly will rise $2,181 a year on average.
A single parent with two children earning $30,000 a year will see a tax hike of $1,600.
A family of four earning $50,000 a year will be hit with a tax increase of 191 percent.
The 2009 budget for the first time ever spends $1 trillion on discretionary items — non-defense, non-entitlement.
“This is a foretaste of future fiscal recklessness under a Barack Obama presidency (he voted for the bill),” the IBD observes.
Noting that the budget would weaken the economy and kill job growth, the IBD concludes: “This is supply-side economics in reverse — creating massive disincentives to work, save and invest, and shrinking the pie.”

I can't believe why he believes it is too generous to our veterans. I could not disagree with him and the president more on this issue."

WCGOP , like many conservatives, has some issues with John McCain. But if this is the style of "take no BS" approach he will bring to the campaign and to the presidency, we have some newfound respect for the man.

In a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, U.S. English, Inc. presented 130 members of Congress with “A in English” awards for their efforts to promote English as the unifying language of the United States. The recipients, represent 37 states and both sides of the political aisle.
All six Republican members of congress were recognized for their efforts.
Not one single Democrat from North Carolina was on the list.....

Last month Doug Berger embarrassed himself by defending the outrageous statements of Barack Obama's pastor.
Obama, himself, rejected the racist, America-hating remarks by Pastor Wright. But Berger actually tried to defend the hateful comments.
For years, Doug Berger has claimed that state marriage statutes can stand a court challenge, and the California Supreme Court has proved him WRONG!

Berger OPPOSES a constitutional amendment to define and protect marriage as only
being between one man and one woman, even though polls show that about 70% of
North Carolinians support the amendment.
Berger said our law was "ironclad". Well....the people in California thought the same thing.

2004 and in 2006 Doug Berger sought and received the enthusiastic support of the
aggressive gay-rights group, EqualityNC. Berger's opposition to the Defense of
Marriage Amendment won him their endorsement.
Doug Berger defies the will of the people in his district by opposing protecting traditional marriage. He's willing to let the courts make the decision.
Chuck Stires strongly believes the strongest foundation for families is based on the marriage of a man and a woman.
Chuck Stires strongly supports the defense of Marriage Amendment, and will work for its passage in the NC Senate.

WCGOP wants you to know that Republican Senator Jim Forrester introduced the Defense of Marriage Amendment again, Senate Bill 1608, co-sponsored by 17 other Republican senators. The Democrat leadership assigned the bill to the ways and means committee, again..... the same committee that let it die in the past.
Obviously, Doug Berger doesn't live in Arizona. They are listening to their voters......
